Extended stays for parents and grandparents of Canadian residents

The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa available exclusively to parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Unlike a standard visitor visa, the Super Visa allows stays of up to five years per entry — recently extended from two — and is valid for up to ten years. It is an excellent option for families awaiting a spot in the Parents and Grandparents Program or for those who prefer extended visits over permanent immigration.

To qualify, the Canadian child or grandchild must meet a minimum income threshold, and the applicant must obtain Canadian private medical insurance with at least $100,000 CAD in coverage for a minimum of one year. A letter of invitation from the sponsoring family member and proof of their status in Canada are also required. The Super Visa is processed separately from a regular visitor visa and has its own distinct requirements and processing timeline.
